After a celebratory birthday lunch for my grandmother, over half of the food we had bought was sitting left over. In my mind, it was obvious that my parents and I would not go through the food, as we do not eat what was left over. Sitting around helped me come up with a solution, "We have enough food why not just throw some meals together and go bring them to the homeless." My dad was up for the idea and that's exactly what we did. We spent around 30 minutes putting together the meals and then left to distribute our creations. We had known that Currie Park usually had people there so we decided it was the best place to start. We had put together 11 meals, and within minutes they were all gone and we needed more. Around 20 other people there had gotten nothing and for us, not being able to provide. We felt horrible. In the car ride home I asked my dad if we could put together more meals and go back or grab some sandwiches from a subway but we agreed on going back tomorrow with even more. March 26, 2022, was the first day we made meals for them. But, we went back the next day and on March 27th we brought 20 meals. We spent all morning shopping, forming, then eventually handing out. That day instead of just the sandwiches and leftovers we made fresh sandwiches, added a can of water, and added a granola bar. It turned out even 20 meals was not close to enough. Continuing to come back on April 2nd with 27 meals, April 9th with 30 meals and old clothes, April 17th (Easter) with 35 meals (+ we added mini easter cakes), April 24th with 40 meals and we got our friends/ neighbors to drop off clothes and old shoes/ socks, we left with around 3-4 trash bags full of shoes, socks, shirts, belts, and hats. That weekend we ended up learning that not everyone stays in the same spots and not as many people were there that day so we decided to drive around with our extra few meals. When we drove around we found a group of men who were working on a house and part-time staying in it, at the time nights got wet and a little chilly, we asked if they needed anything. Next weekend, April 30th, we brought 40 more meals but we also brought tarps, blankets, and more clothes. A distribution was put on pause as summer was full of plans but luckily we are back and ready to head out again. We are back with our feedings as of September 18,2022. Not only do we make sure our meals are heart healthy and good for you but we use environment-friendly products. We use paper bags, paper sandwich bags, and aluminum water cans. As we have been going out and doing feedings we have been able to talk to the homeless, learn their stories, and make connections.
